May. 8th, 2008 @ 03:09 pm On Affirmative Action for Colleges
Current Mood: thoughtful
A conversation I had this afternoon inspired the following thoughts:

The basic argument against affirmative action for colleges is as follows:
1. If a "less qualified" minority student is accepted and a "more qualified" non-minority student is rejected, this is racial discrimination, which is wrong.
2. A student with lower test scores, worse grades, fewer extra-curricular activities, less "intelligence", etc. is "less qualified".

The weakness in this position is not the logical argument in point one. When selecting applicants for a job, one should (both morally and pragmatically) pick the most qualified candidates. If college admissions is analogous to this process, the "job" of students is learning.

Rather, I would contest the second point of the argument. A student with more room for improvement may be in a better position to learn than someone ostensibly "more qualified". Likewise, the "more qualified" student is not necessarily better at learning, they may simply be better at the games of memorization and regurgitation, manipulating teachers, and managing standardized tests. Deciding which student is in fact better qualified is difficult, so I would expect admissions departments to make mistakes. Thus, the knee-jerk accusations of "reverse racism" seem suspiciously hasty and certain.

A college must also consider interactions between students when selecting a student body. Diversity of perspectives is an advantage in many team-based tasks, and education is an exemplary case.

One could argue that education is not the job of colleges, that they are a business like any other, with profit as their sole objective. In that case, schools would certainly be wise to favor wealthy students (less need to pay aid, more family wealth to give) and to look for qualifications which predict success after graduation. Whether those students learn doesn't matter, as the college can list them as alumni and receive their tuition and donations either way. That might make the matter of who is "more qualified" as obvious as people seem to think... or closer to it, anyways.

Certainly the simplicity of this perspective must be tempting for college administrators, and even benevolent administrators want to attract donations (think how much educational good could be done with all that money). Still, I hope that colleges will not become mired in that perspective. Doing so means becoming pure reputation brokers, without that reputation being the side effect of an actual productive activity. During my college search, I asked the head of one of the departments at MIT what made the school better than its competitors, and she stated (paraphrased): "Our good name attracts the best students, those students ensure our good name." This left me with a sour taste in my mouth, as I had been hoping to hear at least something about academics.

I'm at Intercon this weekend. Horribly nerdy, but fun. I've greatly enjoyed all the games I've played in so far (my favorite being this evening's, a story of the Last Supper (passover seder and all) set in an environmental-apocalyptic not-far-future, with elements of space colonization and time travel).

It's a relaxing break, although I really can't afford to take this much time off...

Feb. 26th, 2008 @ 09:54 pm Overthinking and Stupid Programmer Tricks
Current Mood: quixotic
Fizzbuzz is a simple game. Players take turns counting up in sequence from 1, except all multiples of 3 are replaced with "fizz", all multiples of 5 are replaced with "buzz", and all multiples of both are replaced by "fizzbuzz". So players count:
1, 2, fizz, 4, buzz, fizz, 7, 8, fizz, buzz, 11, fizz, 13, 14, fizzbuzz...

This game has become a popular interview question for programmers; it's simple but many self-identified "programmers" don't have the basic problem-solving skills to tackle it. Of course, programmers sense of humor being what it is, all sorts of odd solutions to the problem have popped up in response. My favorite definition of fizzbuzz(n) is:
['fizzbuzz', 'fizz', 'buzz', n][[n%15,n%3,n%5,0].index(0)]
Aside from being a very weird way of implementing a conditional, this is valid Python and valid Ruby. Nifty!

Dougal Stanton also provided this dramatic solution in Haskall (modified a little for brevity):
import Data.Maybe

fizz = concat $ repeat $ replicate 2 Nothing ++ [Just "Fizz"]
buzz = concat $ repeat $ replicate 4 Nothing ++ [Just "Buzz"]
fizzbuzz = zipWith (maybeWith (++)) fizz buzz
numbers = map (Just . show) [1..]

maybeWith f (Just a) (Just b) = Just (a `f` b)
maybeWith _ (Just a) Nothing  = Just a
maybeWith _  Nothing (Just b) = Just b
maybeWith _ Nothing Nothing = Nothing

main = map fromJust $ zipWith (maybeWith const) fizzbuzz numbers
This sort of stuff reminds me of another thing I encountered recently, a regular expresion to "check for primes". The expression in question is:
/^1?$|^(11+?)\1+$/
The first part of this expression matches "" or "1", the vertical bar is a logical or, and the latter part of the expression matches a sequence of two or more ones repeated two or more times. Much less cool than I originally thought it would be, given the title! But it is a regular expression that detects sequences of ones of non-prime length, so you can do the following:
import re
non_prime_length = re.compile(r'^.?$|^(..+?)\1+$',re.DOTALL)
def is_prime(n):
    not non_prime_length.match('X' * n)
That creates a sequence of characters of length n, then checks if the length is prime. This is the sort of thing I'd classify as a "stupid programmer trick", a sort-of clever, not-necessarily-practical, totally silly way of solving a simple problem.

So, to all the programmers out there, what's your favorite stupid programmer trick?

P.S. Incidentally, if you can provide a regular expression such that it actually matches the string representation of only prime (or only non-prime) integers, that would be pretty sweet. A proof that such a thing could not be created would be equally impressive.

From [info]agentfroot:

1. The hordes of giant robo-pandas are stomping through the streets of Boston. What are you doing?

Probably saying something along the lines of "oops".

2. Ok, tell me all about your anime crushes.

I don't tend to have crushes on fictional characters. The closest would probably be Rakka from Haibane Renmei, who I'd just like to give a big hug. (I'd guess that most people who see Haibane Renmei feel the same way, if you haven't, see for yourself.)

3. Are you coming to Confluence this year?

Hopefully. Don't see any reason why I couldn't, and I'll have money from working.

4. Would you rather have spines like a porcupine or poisonous foot barbs like a platypus?

Foot barbs. Porcupine spikes would be far more inconvenient. Although I'm clumsy, so I'd probably have to carry anti-venom around.

5. How tall are you?

5'6".

My job is done. I was going to go in tomorrow morning, but I want to sleep in and finally shake off this illness (still sick, but recovering), and I want to make it to the kick-off for Mystery Hunt at noon. Overall, I've worked a few hours less than I originally expected (minus one day, plus a few hours of overtime), but I feel like I shouldn't worry about missing out on a few hours of pay. I already feel a little bad for going in to work when I really wasn't so well; I know if I was a salaried employee instead of a contractor I would have taken at least one sick day this week. I hope no one at work caught anything unpleasant from me.

Overall, I enjoyed the job. It was extremely interesting, a new sort of work environment for me, my co-workers were quite friendly and supportive, I feel I got a significant amount of work done and provided a good value for my pay. Certainly I feel better about this job than I do about my stint at IBM. Maybe it wasn't quite as fun as my time at Metacarta, but it was perhaps even more educational.

People stayed after work to play poker today ($20 buy-in), and I was the first to wipe out. I'm not very good at poker. Oh, well...

My tongue still hurts from accidentally biting it badly on Monday.

I've seen a lot of fights (generally just verbal altercations, but still) in / around the subway this week and last, which is unusual. The cold weather probably doesn't help the general mood.

Aasted moved in for this week, so things have been cheerfully crowded around the apartment. And Gui is building a climbing wall in the living room.

Life goes on. Things are up and down, but all right.

My parents have headed out of town for a dance weekend, so I'm the only member of my family in Cleveland. Feels odd being the only one in the house.

Dan and I have been watching a lot of movies lately. Yesterday, we watched Idiocracy (which was dull) and today we watched Lord of War (just as awesome as the first time I saw it).

On a completely unrelated note, my glasses have gone missing. I'm pretty sure they got home last night (would have been hard for me to walk home outside without noticing I wasn't wearing them), and I couldn't have taken them out of the house since. But I've checked all the likely places and as many of the unlikely ones as I could, all without success...

Hanging out at the IES Tokyo Center for the last time. On the wall, the motto of IES is posted, which seems to me as good a motto as any:
一期一会、一日一善 ("ichigo ichie, ichinichi ichizen; "treasure every encounter, for it will never recur; do one good deed every day")

The "Four Rules" (which I can't seem to resist mentally translating into /b/-speak) are also posted all over, too:
1. Express your appreciation (needs moar arigatou!)
2. Sit back and observe Japanese way of doing things (LURK MOAR)
3. Keep promises (because anonymous never forgives)
4. Be a good diplomat (anonymous delivers)

I'm done with class now. Can't believe I'm heading home tomorrow. 帰りたいか、かいりたくないか? About going home, I have mixed feelings. There are a lot of things I'm going to miss about this place (Kanda students, my host family, Japanese food, the trains), but I miss home, too. I'm glad the semester is over, though. Ironically, I could use a vacation.

      • Cool UI stuff (YUI shares the shininess)
      • Cool tagging systems
        • Del.icio.us
        • Flickr (tag clusters are nifty)
        • Will any of this improve their search?
        • Is this the next way to create a web catalog, since the hierarchal system doesn't work so well?
    • Google
      • Local search becomes augmented reality (Google Maps + GPS-Enabled Smartphone = Win)
      • Innovative approach to tagging
      • Translation with a statistical focus --> natural language understanding (they're certainly hiring AI programmers left and right)
      • Focusing on internet security, what's this all about? (That plus customized Firefox running off of a USB key = awesome.)
      • Google Gears = webapps that work offline
    • Yahoo vs. Google = explicit vs. implicit metadata? Cool thought, but certainly an oversimplification.
  • Customization to the max
    • Firefox plus extensions
    • Custom start pages
      • Google has the newly renamed iGoogle
      • I still think Netvibes is the best (and it grows ever shinier)
    • Will such customization (to a less obsessive extent) ever be adopted by general audiences?
  • Unrelated notes
    • eBay has bought StumbleUpon and will likely drive it into the ground.
    • Not related to the internet per se, but Microsoft has a new product (including a new OS?) that looks awesome. Innovation? From today's Microsoft? I'm stunned... Seriously, if those things sell for $5K-10K, they will be well worth it. Go and check out the video.

During my trip, I noticed that the tops of a can of Kirin Chu-Hi had something written on them in braille. I wrote down the pattern so I could look it up later. As it turns out, the can says キリン オサケ (Kirin o-sake; "o-sake" is used to mean anything alcoholic) in Japanese braille. The moral of the story is that I really am a compulsive reader.

ゴールデン ウィーク です!

It's Golden Week at last! No classes tomorrow, and I leave for Hiroshima on Saturday!

I feel like things have been going a little better for me language-wise the past few days. I'm suddenly having a slightly (but noticeably) easier time remembering the words and grammar that I've learned, and I've carried on a few real conversations (both in and out of class) in Japanese (quite limited and somewhat broken Japanese, but still).

Yesterday, Kyoko-san took me to a sushi and udon restaurant for lunch, which was awesome. I tried 雲丹 (うに; uni; sea urchin), which was very unusual tasting but rather good.

釜玉うどん (かまたまうどん; kamatama udon; udon with egg and green onion) is awesome. That's the ¥330 lunch I mentioned early on in my trip. Also, いもけんぴ (imokenpi; candied sweet-potato sticks) are one of the best snacks ever.

An Australian paper has an article on the FHCers in Harajuku, which I find amusing.

Also, have you seen this guy?

Celestial Seasonings "Tension Tamer" Tea: eleuthero, peppermint, cinnamon, ginger, chamomile, lemon grass, licorice, catnip, tilia flowers, natural lemon flavor, other natural flavors, hops, vitamins B6 and B12.

Two ingredients I'd never previously heard of, two ingredients I never expected to find in tea, and an inexplicably odd combination of flavors. Nonetheless delicious, although weird.

Random information, from the article on catnip: The volatile oil in catnip contains the monoterpene, nepetalactone, which is similar to the valepotriates found in valerian, a more commonly used herbal sedative. [emphasis mine]

Today is National Hug Day. I was informed of this fact by a jubilant reveler offering passerby free hugs in Lobby 7. (An offer I gleefully accepted.)

*hugs* for all who want one! Have you hugged someone today?

Just felt like sharing this quote:

"Stable ownership is the gift of social law, and is given late in the progress of society. It would be curious then, if an idea, the fugitive fermentation of an individual brain, could, of natural right, be claimed in exclusive and stable property. If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it. He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. That ideas should freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire, expansible over all space, without lessening their density in any point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation..."

-Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to Isaac McPherson, August 13, 1813 (from here, p. 1291-1292)
