I'm back from camp, and back online. Camp was much as I remembered it, with the exception of the food, which wasn't as good (trying to cut expenses, I guess). There was more rain than usual, but when it wasn't raining, the weather was amazing. I got in some kayaking, a bit of swimming, some quality time with my family (including some exciting chess games with Solomon), and a lot of reading. Took quite a few photos, too, which I'll post later. Not extremely eventful, but very relaxing.

Reading List )

Saturday evening I spent with friends in town: DJ, Ginneh (back from California), and Aasted. We went to see Hancock (better than expected, with parts of the plot genuinely surprising, a sort of meta-surprise), then to the Sunset Grill and Tap. I was hungry enough to look at the food menu this time, and the selection there is as impressive as their selection of drinks. At Aasted's suggestion, I tried their peanut butter and jelly sandwich (billed as the peanut butter and jelly "experience", on Texas toast with honeyed fresh-ground peanut butter and strawberry preserves). It is indeed quite something, taste-wise, although I would have preferred the toast crisper; the sandwich seems ideally calibrated for those who like their peanut butter sandwiches soft and messy. I also had a "flight" of beer, four different choices from their interesting selection in five-ounce tasting glasses. Was a wonderful evening.

Dinner was delicious, healthy, and refreshing (it's really muggy outside):
Steamed asparagus with lime and salt
Lowfat yogurt with honey
Orange juice
Carrot sticks
A few cashews

On the other hand, lunch was Sunday brunch out with DJ, so that was:
Steak
Eggs (2)
Hash browns
Pancakes (2)

At least the portions weren't IHOP level; they were fairly reasonable for a diner. Still makes me feel my Sunday diet is somewhat bipolar.

Sunday brunch at The Druid in Inman is a bit on the expensive side, but their Irish breakfast is amazingly good.

In unrelated news, some graduation gifts (in monetary form) arrived in the mail from various relatives. Not sure what I'll buy yet, but I have an inkling.

Now I need to write some proper thank you notes...

Yesterday: Mel's birthday party, ramen afterwards at the Porter Exchange, then to the Sunset Bar and Grill for dessert. Everyone else had Sam Adam's Triple Bock (the Merlot of beers, evidently; smelled quite interesting, but I held off for the sake of my stomach), a few (including me) had some of their specialty ice cream.

Today: Moving day! Walked to Wellesley Hills, took commuter rail into town, rented a U-Haul van with Maya, managed avoid any accidents and/or near-death situations (save for a few Boston-driving-induced cardiac incidents). Celebrated at Tosci's with an excellent rootbeer float (Porter Wort flavor, which has a strong molasses taste, goes very well with root beer, and makes today the second day in a row I've had beer-flavored ice-cream). After that, had dinner at the Border Cafe in Harvard Square with Laura and friends, took the Senate Bus back to Wellesley, and walked home to Olin.

All the Korean exchange students from last semester stayed on, and three more arrived (which means Korean exchange students now comprise over 2% of the student body). Two of them had birthdays this weekend, and the others prepared an amazing birthday feast for all.

On a mostly unrelated note, one of my classmates is running Omnom Truffles, a limited-time business currently open for Valentine's Day (open for orders for the next five days). The truffles are reasonably priced, extremely tasty, and come in a wide variety of gourmet flavors. If you're looking for a last-minute Valentine's Day gift, check it out.

Still sick. Recovering, but my cold has started to move from my throat and nose to my ears and sinuses, which makes me feel real out of it. I was feeling okay at noon, but I was pretty dead by six, and I headed for home at seven. The Mystery Hunt (murder mystery themed this time) puzzles are hard this year, and being sick really limited my enjoyment and effectiveness.

I stopped by Toscanini's on my way home, thinking that some ice cream might brighten my day, but it was closed, with big signs plastered on the windows reading "SEIZED for nonpayment of taxes". :-/

Maybe tomorrow will be better.

My free time this weekend has given me a chance to try CrazyBlindDate, a sister site to OKCupid for those who want more focus on meeting new people IRL as opposed to wasting inordinate amounts of time online. This evening, I met a charming young woman at the L.A. Burdick Chocolate Cafe in Harvard Square, and we conversed over some excellent hot cocoa.

I've settled into the Porter Square residence with Gui and Jenn (Kevin was here briefly; Matt, Not, and Mel are all various levels of away). Today, I ate brunch at Anna's, bought T passes and a towel (forgot mine at Olin), and bummed around various squares. The arcade at MIT has been halved in size and is a lot less homey, but I'll probably spend a lot of time there this break anyways. Harvard Square is always fun, and was even more lively than usual due to the upcoming holidays. I spent quite a while browsing around Cardullo's, which has all the good things in one place, so I love it despite the high prices. All in all, a fun day. I've been browsing through my Perl book on the train, so I'll probably spend the evening working on that.

Done with my responsibilities for the semester!

Yesterday evening, had a celebration dinner with my SCOPE team at Evoo, an excellent fancy restaurant. My meal was ham slices, poached egg, and some sort of hollandaise sauce stacked on an oatmeal croquet with quince chutney. Basically the fanciest ham and eggs ever, and it was amazingly delicious. Apparently, the place has a $50 eight-course tasting menu, and since I'm staying in Boston I'm sure I'll succumb to that temptation at some point in the future.

Today was pretty relaxing. Expo went well. Tomorrow is moving day. I start work on Wednesday.

It's that time again, when I share the best of the best of the latest on the web (from my point of view) for you to peruse at your convenience:

Film and literature: The movie version of Phillip Pullman's The Golden Compass premiers this Friday. It seems that the film has been somewhat sanitized with respect to the book's theological undertones, but that hasn't prevented the Catholic League from denouncing it as some sort of gateway drug to atheism. This has generated quite a bit of commentary in the last few days, with one article discussing the theology of His Dark Materials, another on the relationship between Hollywood and religion, and one focusing on Pullman's perspective on the controversy.

Food: Here's a website that suggests ingredient substitutions and pairings based on analysis of chemical flavor components. In a slightly related vein, here's a recipe for Kiwi Pomegranate Avocado Salsa. DO WANT.

Webapps: Here's an incredibly fast dictionary, and heres a tool for determining how walkable a community is (in terms of distance to various sorts of amenities). I may have posted the second one before, as I came across it soon after it first went up, but it now has the added advantage of actually working.

Programming: I read a very interesting essay on code design patterns (not of ideals but of design in imperfect practice) entitled Big Ball of Mud. There's also a page of evil C code examples.

Job search continues. I have a follow-up phone interview with ITA tomorrow, and an interview at ScanScout on Friday.

Homework load is still high.

The good food around the suite makes me very happy: Tea aplenty, mate, lime seltzer, fresh lemonade, frozen grapes (Ginneh introduced me to this very good idea, the grapes stay fresh and taste like little popsicles).

Thursday evening I baked challah with JOO (Jewish Organization at Olin). The rabbi at the local Chabbad and his wife ran the workshop. I'm rather glad that Ryan took the time to found the club. (Relevant context: Ryan isn't Jewish, but she's rather more observant than I've been lately.)

I need to up my exercise schedule again. I also need to devote more time to studying Japanese. I paid for a subscription to JPOD (I wrote them a letter complaining about their high prices($60/year), and they responded by offering me a 50% discount), but I haven't had time to use that since then.

The weekend was good. My sister's stage combat performance was made of awesome (clearly she drilled the hell out of it), and the film program (which my brother was in) had made some of the best short films I've ever seen. Camp aside, the bed and breakfast was relaxing, and we had an excellent dinner at M.T. Bellies (which I wish was a bit closer to home).

Xave's in town this week, so Monday evening the whole gang got together for dinner (at Tommy's) and a bad movie (seriously, a really bad movie; we were shooting for "so bad it's funny" but it didn't work out that way).

And I ordered a Nintendo Wii from Circuit City! (Although I did have to get the "bundle", the extras were things I was definitely planning to buy.) WiiTracker works! I won't totally believe it, though, until it's in my hands.

(Also, that means my supply of cash is running pretty dry. I really should be doing some actual work for money. Ah, well...)

During my trip, I noticed that the tops of a can of Kirin Chu-Hi had something written on them in braille. I wrote down the pattern so I could look it up later. As it turns out, the can says キリン オサケ (Kirin o-sake; "o-sake" is used to mean anything alcoholic) in Japanese braille. The moral of the story is that I really am a compulsive reader.

Yesterday: Took the shinkansen (bullet train) to Hiroshima. The train is fast, comfortable, and quiet, and the views are quite good. However, if you have a non-reserved seat, you might not get to sit down. (Fortunately, I was getting on at the beginning of the line, so I got to sit down anyways.) In the evening, ate Heroshimayaki (quite possibly the best food ever), wandered around, drank and talked with my hostel-mates. The hostel is crowded but quite comfortable.

Today: Went to Iwakuni for a festival at the Kintai bridge. Wandered around with RJ, a marine who we randomly met on the bus ride. Ate wasabi ice cream (awesome). Took the cable car to the castle on the hillside there. Burritos for dinner. Took lot of pictures.

Tomorrow, we're going to see the Peace Memorial and the Atom Bomb Dome.

I have some homework for over break, but not too much, I hope.

ゴールデン ウィーク です!

It's Golden Week at last! No classes tomorrow, and I leave for Hiroshima on Saturday!

I feel like things have been going a little better for me language-wise the past few days. I'm suddenly having a slightly (but noticeably) easier time remembering the words and grammar that I've learned, and I've carried on a few real conversations (both in and out of class) in Japanese (quite limited and somewhat broken Japanese, but still).

Yesterday, Kyoko-san took me to a sushi and udon restaurant for lunch, which was awesome. I tried 雲丹 (うに; uni; sea urchin), which was very unusual tasting but rather good.

釜玉うどん (かまたまうどん; kamatama udon; udon with egg and green onion) is awesome. That's the ¥330 lunch I mentioned early on in my trip. Also, いもけんぴ (imokenpi; candied sweet-potato sticks) are one of the best snacks ever.

An Australian paper has an article on the FHCers in Harajuku, which I find amusing.

Also, have you seen this guy?

An addendum to yesterday's entry: Mos Burger rocks.

I woke up late today. When checking my watch I made sure that my alarm was set to AM, but I wasn't so careful in ensuring the time was set to PM. Oops. Fortunately, I still got up at a reasonable time, although that might have been partly because I didn't sleep all that well.

Today's test (first unit of Japanese) went all right, but I had a hard time concentrating in class. I have another kanji quiz tomorrow, which is going to be a pain.

Fortunately, I was able to get my cell phone back from the Tokyo Metro lost property office. So that was much less of a hassle than it could have been.

On Thursday, I ran into a Nigerian oil company man on the train. He immediately struck up a conversation, which surprised me, since there isn't much solidarity among gaijin. (I would have expected, "hey, we're both foreigners!" to be a more common starting point for conversation between strangers, but that doesn't seem to be the case.) The guy was named Moses, which led to the following conversation:

Long entry is loooong... )

Also, I haven't been run over yet.
