Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 05:21 pm More On Dr. Horrible: Links, Quote from Joss, Rape Joke In The Comic Book (ugh!)

Two more good posts critiquing Dr. Horrible from a feminist P.O.V.: one at The Hathor Legacy, and one at Rebecca Allen’s place. There’s a lot of good discussion going on in their comments, as well.

* * *

Here’s a relevant quote, from an interview with Joss:

Q: I’ve been reading some criticism (insert audible gasp here!) of “Dr. Horrible” about the lack of a strong, empowered female lead. They claim that Penny is merely a prop for Dr Horrible and Captain Hammer to fight over.

What are your thoughts on that?

Joss Whedon: […] Yeah, Penny is not the feminist icon of our age. And yes, she does exist in the narrative as part of Doc’s fate — but everyone in the story is there to move the story. Is she less real than Hammer? (Is ANYTHING?) We gave her a cause so she wouldn’t JUST be the Pretty Girl but the fact is, neither Doc nor Hammer gives her the attention she deserves — Doc’s crush comes before he has the slightest idea what she cares about. Which is not uncommon. It reminds me of “Sweeney Todd,” the Judge and Sweeney singing “Pretty Women” — a beautiful duet with no insight whatsoever. Just images.

But we shoulda gave her more jokes.

Joss is right that Penny needed more jokes. Dr. Horrible’s mocks the cliches of supervillains, and the cliches of superheros — but there are practically no jokes about the cliches of the Polly Pureheart girlfriend. It ends up feeling as if the video sees that the supervillain/superhero roles need to be questioned critically (by which I mean, “pointed at and mocked”), but takes the Polly Pureheart cliche seriously.

In a story that’s all about the funny, Penny never gets to be funny. I don’t think the feminist audience necessarily wanted to see Penny kick ass, or to live happily ever after, or not to make stupid choices about men (like sleeping with Captain Hammer). I myself would have been happy if her character was as funny as the other two leads. (And the normal-human, straight man role can be made funny; think of how hilarious Jane Curtin was on Third Rock From The Sun).

Joss is right, of course, that all characters are there just to serve the story. And given this story, it would have been hard to make Penny as rich1 a character as Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer. So yeah, to avoid making Penny a sort of boring would have required a bit of above-average writing. But there’s nothing wrong with the audience expecting and wanting above-average writing.

(By the way, Felicia Day is completely capable of being funny — check out the internet sitcom The Guild, which Day writes and stars in, if you haven’t already).

* * *

Finally, the official online comic book, which was written by Joss’ brother Zack, and beautifully drawn by Eric Canete. It’s got a “funny” prison rape joke — Captain Hammer warns readers not to be criminals, or else you’ll “go to prison… with this guy” (illustration shows freakishly huge, muscular prisoner, telling his much smaller cellmate “you have good bone structure.”).

A few points:

1) People might be tempted to defend the rape joke on the grounds that it’s told by Captain Hammer, and that’s just the sort of boorish humor we expect from CH. That’s true, but in the video the humor in all of CH’s comments is that CH is a total ass and saying utterly appalling, awful things. In the comic book, it comes across as the comic book telling a generic prison rape joke, rather than making fun of the person telling the joke.

(Compare this to the prison rape joke Faith makes early in the Buffy episode “Who Are You?,” in which the joke is played as unfunny and appalling.)

If the intent was to make fun of how boorish Captain Hammer is, then the script failed to get the point across.

2) As Liss says, “the jokes normalize and effectively minimize the severity of rape and thusly perpetuate the rape culture.” Why would anyone want to contribute to that? Similarly, from the SAFER blog:

You know why we can’t make fun of rape? Because doing so trivializes the pain inflicted by rape, and that contributes to a general cultural attitude of not taking rape seriously or holding perpetrators accountable. That type of culture makes rape more common.

3) Even if you don’t give a shit about all that, why would any writer who’s not a hack tell a prison rape joke? I can’t imagine a duller, more played-out cliche.

  1. Note that rich doesn’t mean “realistic” or “deep,” which none of these characters were!

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 09:37 am Export the Feeds from a Google Reader Folder
Most feed readers let you import and export subscriptions using the OPML format. For Google Reader, you'll find this option in Settings > Import/Export.

But what happens when you need to export the feeds from a single folder so you can share them with a friend or upload them to a site? Google Reader lets you export the feeds from a folder:

http://www.google.com/reader/public/subscriptions/user/-/label/FOLDER
(you should replace FOLDER with the actual name of the folder)

Another way to share the subscriptions from a folder is to make it public and to use this link for the OPML file:

http://www.google.com/reader/public/subscriptions/user/USERID/label/FOLDER
(USERID can be obtained from the public page created by Google Reader)

This also works if someone shares with you the page of a public folder and you want to obtain the list of subscriptions from that folder. If I share with you my Googlers folder:

http://www.google.com/reader/shared/user/13577231804381328821/label/googlers

you can easily obtain the link to the corresponding OPML file by replacing shared with public/subscriptions:

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 01:18 pm Two new case studies

A couple months ago, I told you about a site we created to highlight organizations and their great uses of Google Maps. Because there are so many amazing examples out there, we've added two more case studies to our gallery.

Both The New York Times and Tripadvisor have created many innovative mashups -- from tracking The New York Times' Frugal Traveler on his national roadtrip, to mapping crime in New York City, to creating applications that millions of people use to rate restaurants. Take a look at this video to see what else Tripadvisor has done:

Visit our case study site to learn more about what these groups are doing with the Google Maps API

If you've created a great Google Maps mashup, we'd love to hear about it! Let us know by filling out this form, and you could even be featured in one of our upcoming case studies.

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 02:00 pm Quote of the Day: Rampant Capitalism ?

From Canada, who may end up being more Capitalist then us Socialists in the USA:

Two major related threats loom over the world economy: credit crises and rising inflation. What do these two menaces have in common? Bankers, hedge-fund managers, speculators and capitalism in general have been taking the hit for the economic turmoil, both for credit risk and inflation. But the looming collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Macin the United States should help change the focus a little. We are now getting down to the heart of the matter, which turns out not to be rampant capitalism but out of control back-door socialism.

I need to have some custom greeting cards printed. I've been looking and looking, but almost everyplace I can find either requires setting up an online store (not exactly the desired direction, here) or ordering something like 200+. I don't need 200+ greeting cards. I need, like, fifty at most, and that's being generous. Twenty to thirty would be a better ballpark. So I need a company that will...

* Let me order a small quantity.
* Let me provide the graphic.
* Print in color (front only; back is black/white, interior blank).
* Preferably charge me something sane.

I'll order larger numbers if quantity math kicks in -- IE, if twenty cards is $20 and fifty cards is $25, I'll naturally go for the larger number of cards -- but would still like to keep this in a reasonable spectrum for both quantity and price. I'm basically using strip sale money to print these, and there just aren't that many comic strips going begging at this point!

No one knows for certain how many insect species reside in the Amazon. One oft-quoted estimate is 30 million, but the actual number could be significantly lower or higher than this. Either way, biologists have long wondered why the richness of insect diversity in the Americas' tropical forests is exponentially higher than temperate forests. Three popular hypotheses have emerged—the theory of refugia, the marine incursion hypothesis, and the riverine barrier hypothesis. To test these theories a group of scientists, headed by Dr. Scott Solomon, studied three species of leaf-cutter ant species from the Amazon.

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 12:32 pm Knol is open to everyone
A few months ago we announced that we were testing a new product called Knol. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects. Today, we're making Knol available to everyone.

The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people's heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.

The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It's their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.

With Knol, we are introducing a new method for authors to work together that we call "moderated collaboration." With this feature, any reader can make suggested edits to a knol which the author may then choose to accept, reject, or modify before these contributions become visible to the public. This allows authors to accept suggestions from everyone in the world while remaining in control of their content. After all, their name is associated with it!

Knols include strong community tools which allow for many modes of interaction between readers and authors. People can submit comments, rate, or write a review of a knol. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads from our AdSense program. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with a revenue share from the proceeds of those ad placements.

We are happy to announce an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker's extensive cartoon repository. Cartoons are an effective (and fun) way to make your point, even on the most serious topics.

Everyone knows something. See what people are writing about, then tell the world what you know: knol.google.com

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 12:40 pm Paulson & Co Opening New Fund to Re-Capitalize Banks

There is no small amount of irony in this:

"John Paulson, the money manager whose wagers against the U.S. housing market helped him earn an estimated $3.7 billion last year, is now seeking to profit from Wall Street's search for capital to offset mortgage writedowns.

Paulson plans to open a hedge fund by December that will invest as the world's biggest banks and brokers add to the $345 billion they've raised in the past year, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. His Paulson & Co., which oversees $33 billion, hasn't set a size target for the fund, said the people, who declined to be identified because the plans aren't final.

The New York-based firm's credit funds rose as much as sixfold last year, helped by bets that rising defaults on subprime home loans would pummel the value of mortgage-backed securities. The meltdown has forced the world's biggest banks and securities firms to take $467 billion in asset write-offs and credit losses and led to the collapse of Bear Stearns Cos.

"Investors who are able to make money in a declining market and then rapidly turn around and profit from a rising market is highly unusual,'' said Thomas Whelan, president of Greenwich, Connecticut-based Greenwich Alternative Investments, which advises clients on investing in hedge funds. Paulson declined to comment. His 2007 earnings made him the highest-paid hedge-fund manager, according to Institutional Investor's Alpha magazine."

Note that Paulson was early in shorting Mortgage back securities, but had the conviction and the patience to wait out the eventual sell off. I would expect something similar here . . .

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 07:33 pm That crumpet recipe

For those (Twitterers & others) who were inquiring — the recipe is over here at The Foppish Baker. If I want crumpets, I have to make them myself: the local supermarket doesn’t carry them. This is okay, though, because there’s no way a store-bought crumpet can compare with one just baked.

There are a lot of crumpet recipes out there that don’t work. Either the batters come out too thick — so the bubbles can’t break and leave the necessary holes on top — or they’re too sloppy, and the bubbles either come out too small to let the melted butter in, or break too soon, so that again you wind up with a “blind” bake with no holes. This batter works perfectly, though.

My only alteration to this recipe: I add two packages of yeast instead of one. It seems to improve the flavor.  Also, you don’t really need the two kinds of flour for this recipe — they’re preferable, but not absolutely necessary. Just make sure you beat the batter the full two minutes the first time. You want to make sure the gluten develops enough.

BTW, there’s no need for special crumpet rings: I use regular-size tuna cans with the tops and bottoms taken off (we have one of those can openers that mills the edges smooth). Butter them well inside between each batch. It’s pretty easy to use a flat knife to knock the rings up and off the crumpets as soon as the outsides are solid: that way you can set them aside to cool so you can handle them as soon as the crumpets in the pan or on the griddle or bakestone are done. (Yeah, there’s a crumpet recipe on that page. It’s not as good as the Foppish Baker one: I’m going to replace it. The English muffin recipe, though, is terrific.)

When you toast these, do it under the grill / broiler, or in a toaster oven that lets you do just one side. Then… the butter.

NOM NOM NOM NOM.

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 02:24 pm Anarcho-capitalist police procedural?
I happen to be a fan of TNT's The Closer. I was thinking about the most recent episode, in which Deputy Chief Brenda Lee Johnson (gotta say the whole thing) told Lieutenant Flynn that they couldn't "pick and choose which laws applied to which people." That got me thinking about anarcho-capitalism and law enforcement, and more specifically, could a TV show about a private police force in Ancapistan work?

Firstly, I'm looking to links and documents about police in Ancapistan and how law functions, but I'm also looking for more creative suggestions from you. What do you think should be put into a show about Ancap cops? What should be the setting? Could it be future or alternate history? What would make it different from all the other police shows out there today? I'm not really sure of anything at this point (even the title is up for grabs) but I am sure that a few of you have creative skills and some ideas (and URLs) to share.

Although the most important question is one no one may be able to answer: would anybody actually watch it?

Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 11:24 am More on Michael Savage
From [info]amenquohi 's LJ
Conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage has an opinion on autism that he felt like sharing with his listeners.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25788692/

Some parents of autistic children have called for Savage’s firing after he described autism as a racket last week. “In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out,” Savage said on his radio program last Wednesday.

Savage then went on to say, “What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them don’t act like a moron, you’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up! Act like a man! Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’”

Mr. Savage's program is nationally syndicated, and airs on Talk Radio Network. You can email them here, or contact them via fax, phone and snail mail at:

Talk Radio Network
P.O. Box 3755 Central Point, Oregon 97502

Phone: 541-664-8827

Fax: 541-664-6250

Feel free to click on Talk Radio Network's homepage, check out their sponsored ads and then let their sponsors know you won't buy their products and services as long as they advertise on TRN while Mike Savage is spouting his ignorance and vitriol.

Please pass this link along to your friends lists, along with the contact information. People like Mike Savage choose to embrace and further ignorance, and because of them, some child may be cowering in a corner, hearing over and over again what a moron he is, instead of getting the intervention he needs. Some tired, frustrated mother or father is getting dirty looks and being told to control their "brat", instead of getting the support and guidance they need to truly help their child. This cannot go on.

The following wasn't written by me, but by someone commenting on her blog... and I agree with his opinions wholeheartedly! I am also glad that Savage has been replaced.

Micheal Savage is a moron on too many levels to measure.

He's been fired and replaced by Dennis Miller, who I don't think is much better.

He was defending his statements yesterday and everything he said was just as offensive as his original statements.

He is also claiming that the autism label is also one of big Pharma's ploys. Since there is no drug or medication currently being prescribed for any of the autism spectrum I'm having a hard time figuring out how he came to that conclusion. ~ oh wait, no I'm not. It's because HE'S A FUCKING MORON.

And a mean, vicious, teeny little pea brained, rotten black hearted moron at that.
